Here's something you may have already noticed: if you run and jump once and then quickly jump again, your second jump will be much, much higher than the first jump. While in this stance, Altair will not fall off of ledges unless you jump. When walking on narrow ledges and on other precarious platforms that seem easy to fall off, simply hold down the R button and Altair will take a crouching stance. With the Y-button counter, you frequently have to change position in order to execute the command, but with the X-button counter you won't have to move at all, making for quicker kills. This counter is better because you can perform the follow-up kill command simply by releasing the guard button and mashing X again. However, pressing X to counter will knock the opponent onto the ground.

Pressing Y will knock the opponent dizzy, leaving them standing so you can move in for a kill. Pressing either Y or X to perform a counter will result in a different counter type. There's no timing required for the counter move, so just mash away! Altair will not animate at all until an enemy attacks you, at which point you will automatically counter the enemy's attack. Simply hold guard (R trigger) and rapidly mash either X or Y. The countering system in Altair's Chronicles is very easy to exploit.
